Single-celled powerhouse

Nature's health package comes in one of the oldest, simplest life forms on the planet -- blue-green algae or Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA). This tiny, graceful, single-celled organism grows in the rich sediment and ash on the bottom of volcanic lakes in various parts of the world. A rich resource of this amazing nutrient can be found in Upper Klamath Lake in the Cascade Mountains of southern Oregon. The blue-green algae, or AFA, receives nutrients from the mineral rich volcanic silt and pure mountain streams washing in from the surrounding volcanic terrain. New scientific breakthroughs

In a recent double-blind, cross-over study performed at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, it was discovered that eating blue-green algae triggered the migration of 40 percent of the circulating natural killer cells from blood to tissue within two hours of consumption. To be successful, the immune system needs killer cells that are active and travel into tissue. Natural killer cells are mainly responsible for the detection and removal of "sick cells" that are present in the development of cancer or the spreading of viral infections like colds and flu.

Another study in 1998 at the Royal Victoria Hospital suggested that eating the AFA algae reduces blood cholesterol. A Boston University study indicated that a diet rich in AFA may reverse symptoms of essential fatty acid deficiencies, specifically omega-3 and omega-6. Deficiency in essential fatty acids has been associated with cardiovascular disease.

In a placebo-controlled study by the University of New Mexico, consumption of this blue-green algae was shown to stimulate specific areas of the brain lending support to the prolific reports of increased mental alertness.

Much evidence already exists suggesting that blue-green algae, which contain high concentrations of chlorophyll, phycocyanin and beta-carotene, may play a valuable role in any cancer prevention program.
