Blue-Green Algae: The Mighty Molecule

The importance of a strong immune system is indisputable. It is an important first line of defense against everything from the common cold to such life-threatening diseases as AIDS or cancer. A strong. healthy immune system functioning at peak performance can halt and even help reverse disease.

Trouble on the horizon

Many types of infections are on the rise, as are a variety of bacterial, vital and parasitic pathogens causing them. To make matters worse, antibiotics are becoming ineffective against these "bugs." New and more virulent strains are appearing.

According to the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, food-borne infections alone are responsible for an estimated 6.5 million illnesses and more than 9,000 deaths annually in the United States. In addition, it is estimated that up to S20 billion is lost to medical treatment of these disorders and the resulting absenteeism.

Single-celled powerhouse

Fortunately, nature provides the way to boost your immune system and to safeguard yourself from the growing risk posed by a variety of infections. Nature's health package comes in one of the oldest, simplest life forms on the planet -- blue-green algae or Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA). This tiny, graceful, single-celled organism grows in the rich sediment and ash on the bottom of volcanic lakes in various parts of the world. A rich resource of this amazing nutrient can be found in Upper Klamath Lake in the Cascade Mountains of southern Oregon. The blue-green algae, or AFA, receives nutrients from the mineral rich volcanic silt and pure mountain streams washing in from the surrounding volcanic terrain. Each batch is tested for any neurotoxins that may exist in other species of flora. The AFA is chilled, flash frozen and then freeze-dried to preserve the enzymes and rich nutrients. The final product is certified organic and Kosher.

AFA is full of amino acids, essential fatty acids, active enzymes, trace minerals, vitamins, phytonutrients and many other vital micronutrients, whose dietary significance is only now beginning to be understood by scientists and researchers. The amazing AFA is packed with protein, chlorophyll, beta-carotene. antioxidants, vitamin B-12 and is available for instant use by the human body.

New scientific breakthroughs

In a recent double-blind, cross-over study performed at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, it was discovered that eating blue-green algae triggered the migration of 40 percent of the circulating natural killer cells from blood to tissue within two hours of consumption. To be successful, the immune system needs killer cells that are active and travel into tissue. Natural killer cells are mainly responsible for the detection and removal of "sick cells" that are present in the development of cancer or the spreading of viral infections like colds and flu.

Another study in 1998 at the Royal Victoria Hospital suggested that eating the AFA algae reduces blood cholesterol. A Boston University study indicated that a diet rich in AFA may reverse symptoms of essential fatty acid deficiencies, specifically omega-3 and omega-6. Deficiency in essential fatty acids has been associated with cardiovascular disease.

In a placebo-controlled study by the University of New Mexico, consumption of this blue-green algae was shown to stimulate specific areas of the brain lending support to the prolific reports of increased mental alertness.

Much evidence already exists suggesting that blue-green algae, which contain high concentrations of chlorophyll, phycocyanin and beta-carotene, may play a valuable role in any cancer prevention program. An independent report recently published by the Research Institute of Oncology and Medical Radiology in Russia reported on the ability of AFA algae to stimulate the immune system and assist in the treatment of breast cancer.
