Depression treatment a matter of belief

Psychiatrists believe we cannot control our depression or mania without drugs. I have always wondered why they didn't just choose to believe we did have control. Belief is such a powerful force because it acts as a stop sign in our lives. Once we come to a belief, like every other stasis in life, it must be maintained. to maintain belief, we must necessarily prevent ourselves from seeking other possibilities to the contrary. But since belief is all process and no content, why not harness it to work for us instead of against us and believe we can do something instead of believing we can't? Then we will keep looking for new possibilities.
