Genetic susceptibility also plays a role, since people who carry both copies of the apoE4 gene have a much higher risk of getting Alzheimer's disease than those with the apoE3 gene. Recent studies using cell cultures have shown that this is due to the fact that those with apoE4 genes also have lower levels of antioxidant defense enzymes than those with apoE3 genes. Exposure to conditions that increased free-radical generation and lower antioxidant defenses markedly increased a neuron's sensitivity to mercury toxicity.
