The Beautiful Truth

Hailing from a small town in Alaska, 15-year-old Garrett sets out to investigate the direct link between diet and disease, and in the process, he learns about world's simplest cure for cancer. An inspirational journey of a boy who learns about the dangers of the toxic materials that surround us, The Beautiful Truth, written and directed by Steve Kroschel, premiered at The Quad Cinema in New York City on November 14, 2008.

As Garrett grows up on an Alaskan animal reserve, his father recognizes his son's interest in the dietary habits of their animals. After the accidental and tragic death of his mother, 15-year old Garrett begins spiraling downward fast. His father withdraws him from school to prevent him from flunking out, after which he is homeschooled. His father assigns a book written by Dr. Max Gerson, which maintains that there is a direct link between diet and a cure for cancer. Fascinated and curious, Garrett embarks on a crosscountry road trip to investigate the merits of the Gerson Therapy. He meets with scientists, doctors, and cancer survivors who reveal how the multi-billion-dollar medical industry has made it their mission to dismiss the notion of alternative and natural cures.

Garrett's travels introduce him to Dr. David Kennedy, the past president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and an expert on mercury in amalgam fillings; Dr. John Olney, a renowned neuroscientist, founder of the field of science known as "excitotoxicity" and leading researcher on the links between aspartame, MSG (monosodium glutamate), and brain cancer; and Dr. Hal Huggins, a former licensed dentist who now is a pioneer in identifying toxic dental materials, balancing body chemistry, and exposing the dangers of fluoride.

As chronic disease rates soar in this country, The Beautiful Truth shines a light on a little-known but much-reviled (by the American Medical Association) cure for cancer known as Gerson Therapy. In 1928, Gerson, a German Jew, discovered a therapy based on eliminating toxins, ingested from air, water, and food, by consuming an all-natural diet that boosts the immune system. With its whole-body approach to healing, the Gerson Therapy cites over 200 articles in respected medical literature and scientific documentation about thousands of people cured of their "incurable" diseases through the therapy program over the last 60 years. Dr. Albert Schweitzer said of Gerson, "I see in Gerson one of the most eminent medical geniuses to ever walk among us." Despite the dismissal by the pharmaceutical and medical industries, the Gerson Therapy has proven to be effective, and Gerson's legacy is carried on by his daughter, Charlotte Gerson, who is also featured in the film.

This is the first feature length documentary for Director Kroschel, who is also an avalanche expert, wildlife expert, and widowed father, and has been a natural history filmmaker for over 20 years. His directorial credits include Out of the Wilderness, Avalanche, and The Adventures of Black Feather. He has shot over 100 documentaries for National Geographic, the BBC, and PBS with additional feature film credits, including Vertical Limit, Eight Below Zero, Seven Years in Tibet, I Spy, Never Cry Wolf, Pathfinder, Wild America, and more. His personal journey has included the discovery of the Gerson Therapy, thereby finding himself, "compelled to make an entertaining, yet convincing film to inform the world of the imperative and life-changing knowledge that I had stumbled upon." Garrett, the young man featured in the film, is his son.

The Gerson Therapy

The Gerson Therapy for cancer and chronic illnesses has been with us for about 60 years. As with all things of such an age, updating might be in order. There is also a need to introduce the therapy to people not yet aware of it. The founder's daughter, Charlotte Gerson, has done just that with her new book, Healing the Gerson Way.

Gerson starts at the very beginning with a brief biography of her father, Dr. Max Gerson. As a young physician in Germany, Dr. Gerson suffered debilitating cluster migraines. His search for relief led him to a vegetarian, low-salt diet that resolved the problem. He continued his exploration of diet and health, eventually developing the Gerson Therapy, which offers a cure for cancer and other serious illnesses by addressing the root causes of illness.

According to Gerson, the causes of illness are toxicity of the body and nutrient deficiency. The fault for this can be attributed to the modern way of life. Our air, water, and food have become so polluted they are constantly delivering toxins to the body. At the same time, nutrients have been depleted from our sources of nutrition. Processed foods have replaced nutritional foods, and chemical agriculture has depleted nutrients from our fresh foods. As a result, our bodies become deficient in the very nutrients necessary for maintaining a healthy immune system.

The body's defense against these modern insults is a miraculous coordination of the immune, enzyme, and hormone systems. Gerson explains how these systems need adequate nutrition to function properly and how they are vulnerable to breaking down in the face of too many toxins and poor nutrition. Cancer, heart and circulatory diseases, arthritis, and diabetes are just a few of the consequences of this breakdown.

The first order of business in the Gerson Therapy is to restore the body's defenses. This is accomplished by detoxifying the body and replenishing nutrients. The regimen calls for juicing live, raw vegetables and fruits that one consumes hourly. As the patient's condition improves, they are able to introduce vegetarian meals and supplements. The intention of this protocol is to supply the body with a constant level of much-needed nutrients. The body is then able to release accumulated toxins.

The primary organ for detoxification is the liver, which unfortunately can be overwhelmed by the new influx of toxins, even to the point of a life-threatening situation. To prevent this, Gerson calls for coffee enemas to speed the process of flushing out toxins. This may be puzzling to some readers, but Gerson informs us that the coffee opens the bile duct that allows release of more toxins. In addition, the normal activity of the enzyme glutathione 5-transferase, which removes free radical toxins from the bloodstream, is increased 600% with a coffee enema.

The Gerson Therapy described in this book has been updated from the 1958 version published by Dr. Max Gerson. Some new supplements have been added to replace original medications that are no longer available. In response to the fact that patients are much more toxic now than they were 60 years ago, new supplements and ozone have also been added. Also added is the scientific research that supports the principles of the Gerson Therapy. The latest research is included in this extremely well-referenced book.

On one level, this book offers a guide to principles of staying healthy in our modern world that could teach the reader to make better choices before illness strikes. The true intention of this book, however, is to serve as a comprehensive guide for the seriously ill patient who desires a cure.

As the author notes, this is an intense therapy requiring total commitment. Because there are few practitioners of the Gerson Therapy, most patients will be fortunate if they can find a health professional who will assist them through the process. In light of that fact, the author provides the complete therapy in this book. The reader will know which illnesses can be treated, why each step of the therapy is required, what the daily schedule and the required laboratory tests will be, what supportive care will be needed, and what medications will be appropriate. Serious illness presents us with a whole new set of choices for which we want to be well-informed. Healing the Gerson Way gives us more information, some additional choices, and hope.

For each of us, eventually whether we’re ready or not, someday it will come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours, or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear. So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won’t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived at the end. It won’t matter if you’re beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days will be measured? What will matter is not what you’ve bought but what you’ve built, not what you got but what you gave. What will matter is not your success but your significance. What will matter is not what you’ve learned but what you’ve taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, and sacrifice that enriched and empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone. What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live with those who love you.

A life lived that matters is not of circumstance but of choice.

There are presently about 4,000 food additives in use. They are used to enhance flavor, provide flavor, and improve appearance. The consumer may not know the difference between the real and the artificially flavored food but the human body does. When it is delivered nutrient-rich foods, it maintains the systems in the body. When it is delivered chemicals, it is not maintaining systems, but rather, the body is being taxed to dispose of those chemicals.
