Israel once had one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the world. Within a few years of banning three organochlorine pesticides (DDT, BHC, and lindane) in the early 1970s, however, breast cancer deaths dropped 8 percent, while they were rising everywhere else in the world. Geography IS a risk factor for breast cancer if you live in an area polluted with industrial waste. According to a 1989 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, breast cancer rates are higher in the 339 U.S. counties with hazardous waste sites and groundwater contamination.
