WHEAT FIBER AND VITAMINS C AND E DECREASE RECTAL POLYPS

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, September, 1989, pp. 1290-1297 reported a randomized, double-blind (researchers did not know which patients received which treatment), placebo-controlled study (some patients received a harmless substance only) of 58 patients previously treated for rectal polyps. Participants were randomly assigned to three categories: one group received 22.5g high-fiber daily supplement with vitamins A and E, another group received vitamins C and E and a 2.2g low-fiber daily supplement. The control group received placebos and a 2.2g low-fiber daily supplement. There was a significant decrease in the number of polyps as the amount of ingested fiber increased.
