Fish for cancer protection

Here's a new reason to turn to the sea for a healthy meal: Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herring may protect you from kidney cancer. In a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Swedish women who ate one or more servings of fatty fish per week had a 44 percent lower risk of developing kidney cancer, compared with women who ate no fish. (The American Cancer Society estimates more than 14,000 U.S. women were diagnosed with the disease in 2006.) Don't let the words "fatty fish" scare you. They're rich in omega-3s and vitamin D, the nutrients researchers believe offer the cancer-fighting benefits. Try pickled herring on an open-face sandwich with tomato slices, thinly-sliced red onion, and a squirt of lemon juice.
