Rates of heart disease and diabetes will rise as more Americans develop a condition known as metabolic syndrome, predicts the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Metabolic syndrome encompasses a set of health problems, including high blood pressure and excess weight in the midsection, that together weaken heart and metabolic health. A change in eating habits could help prevent or even treat the condition. According to a study in the Journal of the America n Medical Association, following a Mediterranean-style diet — low in saturated fats and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and olive oil — may help eliminate the components of metabolic syndrome and keep your heart healthy.
