WITH HEART DISEASE BEING THE NUMBER ONE cause of mortality in our society and coronary artery disease accounting for approximately half of all deaths from heart disease, achieving optimum cholesterol levels has become a serious issue for most health conscious individuals.

Cholesterol is largely misunderstood. It is not bad in and of itself but a vital building block of the body that must be kept in balance. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance also called lipid (fat) alcohols. Important tissues and organs such as the brain, spinal cord, kidneys and adrenal glands utilize cholesterol. It is also essential in the manufacture of nerve tissue, bile and many hormones. Low-density (LDL) and high-density (HDL) lipoproteins transport cholesterol through the bloodstream.

Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, carry cholesterol through the bloodstream for participation in the cell-building needs of the body but leave behind excess deposits called plaque, which accumulate on the walls of arteries.

High-density lipoproteins, or HDL, remove these excess deposits, "cleaning" the arterial walls for the free flow of blood through the body. This excess LDL, or "bad" cholesterol is transported by the HDL, or "good" cholesterol and is excreted.

When there is too much cholesterol in the diet, an imbalance results where HDL, or "good" cholesterol can not "clean" all of the excess LDL or "bad" cholesterol left behind. Plaque remains. Heart disease, heart attack, hardening of the arteries and a host of other problems are invited.

If you are not aware of your cholesterol levels, it is suggested that you consult with your personal physician, chiropractor, nutritionist or other health care professional to arrange for a lipid profile blood test. If the results are within acceptable levels, it is suggested that you should be rechecked at least every two years. If your results indicate you are at risk, discuss what dietary, supplementation and life style changes would be advisable with your health care professional.

Basic cholesterol management starts with an exercise regimen. Reduce your body fat. If you are 10 pounds over weight, your body produces an extra 100 mg of cholesterol a day. Learn to manage cholesterol at its source--the food you eat. Use moderate consumption of lean meat, roasted, broiled or baked; choose polyunsaturated and monosaturated fats over saturated fats; eat five to seven fresh fruits and vegetables a day; choose whole grain pasta, breads and cereals; avoid butter, shortenings, mayonnaise and tropical oils. Choose skim or low fat milk, light cheese and yogurt.

Cholesterol-lowering supplements and prescription medications are also available. However, most anti-cholesterol agents generally act on the liver. Since the liver is the cholesterol production center of the body, these anti-cholesterol agents may block cholesterol synthesis by going right to the "factory" of cholesterol. But good cholesterol is also produced in the liver after cholesterol's absorption into the bloodstream.

Esterin Process Alfalfa Saponins
Used by millions of Europeans since its introduction in 1990, Esterin process alfalfa saponins are recognized for their cholesterol-lowering properties which neutralize cholesterol in the stomach, thereby preventing new cholesterol from reaching the bloodstream. By blocking new cholesterol, they allow the body to rid itself of bad cholesterol naturally.

While other anti-cholesterol agents act on the liver after cholesterol's absorption into the body, seeking to affect its cholesterol synthesizing mechanism, Esterin process alfalfa extract, with its high concentration of saponins, acts to neutralize the cholesterol prior to its absorption in the stomach, causing it to be harmlessly excreted.

Esterin has been the subject of numerous clinical studies since 1990. The following results and comments from a controlled clinical study of the effect of Esterin on blood lipid parameters by the World Health Organization Collaborating, Center for Human Genetics/Teratology are typical of study reports.

"Apart from changes in blood lipid levels values the other physiological parameters remained within the normal range. No characteristic side effects were observed during the clinical trial period.

The favorable effect of the Esterin preparation has been demonstrated in connection with the total serum cholesterol level and especially effective in the reduction of the harmful LDL cholesterol, as well as the substantial increase in the hardly improvable HDLP. Due to the advantageous change of the above parameters, the aterogen index fell within close correlation to ateriosclerosis. The HDLP/LDL also exhibited a favorable change."

Extensive clinical studies have shown that Esterin process alfalfa saponins may assist a synergistic effect between HDL and LDL levels. Studies concluded that not only were LDL levels reduced, but HDL (or "good" cholesterol) levels were increased. When factored together, Esterin has been shown to reduce combined cholesterol levels by up to 42 percent--even in instances of serious hypercholesterolaemias.

Patented Esterin process alfalfa saponins are being marketed exclusively in the United States by Omni Nutraceuticals under the brand name Cholestaid Trademark and will be generally available by mid-October 1999.
