first aid for hay fever and sinusitis using homoeopathics

in the Spring, nature wakes from her winter dormancy all set for a pageant of sex and survival. A myriad of chemical love notes are launched, trees caress the breeze, flowers flaunt their pollens, and we unsuspecting humans breathe it all in. Pollens contain proteins and our immune systems are set up to detect foreign proteins that enter our bodily environment. This is fine if the protein is part of a bacteria or virus aiming to reside and populate within our person. It is perfectly useless if it is a pollen (which has no use for a human body at all) and even worse if it is dust. People who react to non-threatening substances such as pollen and dust are said to be allergic to that substance. Some folk have no reaction to the range of substances that can act as irritants, others are extremely sensitive. In the latter, the immune system is on red alert and continuously defending the body against substances it should be ignoring. Sensitivity to allergens depends on various factors including heredity, the condition of the immune system, stress, poor diet, insufficient sleep, emotional traumas and infections. Personally I don't think this condition occurs in very relaxed people. There is generally a component of worry, sensitivity, defensiveness, hyperactivity, hyperacidity, workaholism, etc.

ALLERGY

This is a complex subject and we'll only be discussing the seasonally induced variety commonly referred to as `hay fever'. This is a reaction of the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and air passages to seasonal pollens and dust, feathers, animal hair and other irritants. Rhinitis and sinusitis are names for symptoms that can occur singly or with other `hay fever' symptoms. (Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal mucosa, sinusitis is the inflammation of one or more of the sinus cavities or passages.) Antibodies, produced to attack the allergen, release histamine which triggers an inflammation reaction such as itching in the eyes and upper respiratory tract, pain and swelling of the eyes, nose and throat, a clear watery discharge from the nose and eyes, frequent sneezing, nervous irritability, fatigue, headache, earache, mild fever, cough and increased susceptibility to infection.

Vitamins A, C, and E, and the minerals zinc, magnesium, potassium and calcium, boost immune system function and can be preventative taken before an attack. ( 1). This hints at the possibility that boosting the immune system makes it less hypersensitive. Stress will aggravate all the above symptoms and avoiding stress is recommended by most texts. Therefore, throw in the B complex vitamins to the list above. Avoiding the causative irritant is wise. This may mean, for example, avoiding milk, bread or sugar or getting out of that dusty environment. Avoiding pollen is not so easy. If a particular plant is the culprit, its pollen can be made into a homoeopathic remedy. The Brauers company will do this if sent a pollen sample; your local homeopathic practitioner may be persuaded to do the same. Or you can easily do it yourself.

Place a half teaspoon of the offending pollen in a small clean bottle and fill it almost full with a mix of 50% brandy / 50% distilled water (if you are using a 10 ml dropper bottle, you'll need 70 ml of this mixture). Cap and leave for a day.
Give it a good shake and leave for another day.
Tip out 9/10 of the contents and refill with the brandy / water mix. Give it two good shakes, each time whacking the bottle against the palm of the hand.
Repeat step 3 six times. The contents of the dropper bottle is now a 6 X remedy of the original pollen. Take four doses daily and every half hour if symptoms arise. You can take it up to 12X or 30X by the same method although reduce the dosage to twice daily with the 30X.
Chronic and severe symptomatology, especially if hereditary, requires long term and personalised treatment. There are some first aid remedies that can afford temporary and efficient relief available from the local naturopathic or homoeopathic clinic. Health food stores stock homoeopathic mixtures, which are worthwhile trying. If self prescribing with the remedies below use the 3X, 3C, 6X or 6C potencies.

For Warm Constitutions (worse In summer, prefer the cold)

Allium Cepa 6X, 6C (Common Red Onion)

Everyone knows the effects of slicing onions -- burning of the eyes, eyelids, throat and skin, with tears and nasal discharge. With prolonged exposure there is inflammation of the mucous membranes. Prepared homoeopathically, it treats these same symptoms. It also cures a large proportion of head colds if the above symptoms are present, which makes it a handy first aid tool. Symptoms unique to this remedy are left-sided symptoms, drowsiness, worse for warmth, stuffy rooms and better for open air. You can make this remedy with the method mentioned above.

Nat. Mur. 6X, 6C (Sodium Chloride, common salt)

It may be hard to see how a substance that we consume in our daily diet can have effect as a medicine. Perhaps because it is used to regulate fluid levels within and without every cell in the body that it has such far-reaching effects when rendered into a homoeopathic remedy, especially where an accumulation or lack of fluid is problematic. We are, after all, two thirds water. Use this remedy where the eyes and nose are gushing water, the head is throbbing and the sinus' are waterlogged and aching. Peculiar symptoms calling for this remedy are a squirming sensation in the nostril, like a little worm, and an aggravation of symptoms from exposure to the sun or summer heat.

- This is available as a tissue salt from health food stores. Or make it yourself but you'll need non-iodised sodium chloride.

Chilly People (worse for the cold), Chilly Remedies

Sabadilla 6X, 6C (Asagraea officinalis)

Historically used to treat lice and worms, the homoeopathic preparation brought out its usefulness in `hay asthma'. It suits a chilly constitution, where the person is worse for cold air. They may complain of chilliness alternating with flushes of heat. Use it where the mucous discharge is severe and the throat feels swollen, `closed' or blocked with a lump that must be swallowed. Sore throats applicable to this remedy are characterised by a constant necessity to swallow. It's a remedy for chronic sore throats that are worse for cold and cold air. Other characteristics that call for this remedy are an itch- in the nostrils, ears and scalp. Also violent spasmodic sneezing followed by lachrymation of the eyes, especially if the attacks are periodical.

Mag. Phos 6X, 6c (Magnesium Phosphate)

Try this remedy if there is alternation between stoppage and gushing of the discharge. Or the head cold may be alternately dry and loose. This remedy controls muscle spasm, hence it's useful if there is associated spasmodic closure of the windpipe, paroxysms of cough with no expectoration, or a dry, spasmodic tickling cough. Particularly with twitching of the facial muscles (or any other muscles for that matter). It will relax the respiratory muscles and can be used (if the characteristic symptoms are present) to prevent a threatening attack of hay fever from maturing, or to relax the same when it has already set in. If the weather has been sultry and the patient stuffy during the day, with short anxious breathing, use this remedy every hour during the day and in the evening, mixed with warm water. (Warm water increases its effectiveness)( 2).

- This is available as a tissue salt from health food stores.

Silicea 6X, 6C (Silicic Oxide, Flint)

This is for a nervous, highly sensitive sufferer, typically blonde, finely built and prone to perspiration around the head, hands and feet. Sneezing is predominant and violent. The tip of the nose is red; it itches and tingles madly. The throat is hoarse, rough and dry with a tickling cough worse for speaking and lying down at night.

- This is available as a tissue salt from health food stores. Or make it from ground up quartz crystal.

There are several manufacturers with hay fever mixtures on the market. Those made from herbal extracts usually contain ingredients like horseradish, golden seal, eyebright and garlic. The homoeopathic mixtures can contain some obscure ingredients. These `patent' mixtures do not work with all cases of hay fever - no substance or mixture does. They are worth a try so don't give up if a particular remedy is ineffective.
