Homeopathy: An ally in the battle to stop smoking

Homeopathy: An ally in the battle to stop smoking

There is no doubt left that cigarettes kill. Every year in the United States alone, 419,000 people die of smoking-related causes. And according to the World Health Organization, smoking is responsible for approximately three million deaths throughout the world every year. The American Cancer Society estimates that, on average, smokers cut 15 years off their lives.

You've probably talked to your patients about the health risks of tobacco use. However, as most smokers know, kicking the habit for good is one of the hardest challenges they face. To quit smoking successfully, people need a strategy, plenty of patience, and moral support.

Homeopathy can also help. The right combination of homeopathic compounds will reduce the craving for nicotine, increase will power, and ease withdrawal symptoms.

Nicotine addiction

Approximately 70% of smokers want to quit, according to a 1993 National Health Interview Survey. However, the nicotine in cigarettes is a powerfully addictive drug. In fact, former heroin addicts have claimed that quitting smoking was more difficult than quitting heroin.

Soon after starting the cigarette habit, the smoker develops a tolerance for nicotine's impact. Like heroin, cocaine, and other dangerous drugs, the smoker become increasingly dependent. And like any other drug addiction, users experience withdrawal symptoms -- sometimes severe -- when they stop using nicotine.

Even the government has taken a stand on tobacco addiction.

In 1988, then-Surgeon General C. Everett Koop released a hard-hitting report titled, "The Health Consequences of Smoking: Nicotine Addiction," comprising two decades of research by over 50 scientists.

Koop stated: "Our nation has mobilized enormous resources to wage a war on drugs. We should also give priority to the one addiction -- tobacco addiction -- that is killing more than 300,000 Americans each year."

Drawbacks of mainstream deterrents

Smokers desperate to quit may opt for nicotine patches or other popular smoking deterrents because they don't know they have a better choice. Mainstream smoking deterrents have been linked with difficulty in breathing, cold sweats, faintness, flushing, heart palpitations, and visual disturbances.

Homeopathy is better choice

Homeopathy offers an effective, gentle alternative for the smoker-who's ready to quit. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of homeopathic remedies is that they work without toxicity or side effects.

The following compounds are especially helpful:

Tabacum. Controls the body's desire for tobacco.

Staphysagria. Increases will power and helps break the smoking habit.

Nux vomica and Lobelia. Reduces the body's craving for nicotine.

Combining these substances increases their therapeutic impact and addresses a broader range of symptoms.

The body will forgive the smoker

If your patients are only focused on the difficulty of quitting, point out the benefits they'll observe within hours, days, months, and years:

- Within 20 minutes, their blood pressure, pulse rate, and the temperature of their hands and feet all return to normal.

- Within eight hours, their blood levels of carbon monoxide decrease as blood levels of oxygen increase.

- Within 24 hours, their risk of heart attack decreases.

- Within 48 hours, their nerve endings start regrowing, and senses of taste and smell improve.

- Within one-to-nine months, coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath are all reduced. The cilia in the lungs begin to re-grow, increasing the body's ability, to clean the lungs and ward off infection.

- Within one year, the risk of coronary heart disease is one-half that of a smoker.

- Within five-to-15 years, stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker. In addition, risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, and esophagus is half that of a smoker.

- Within 10 years, the risk of lung-cancer death is the same as a non-smokers. The body has replaced pre-cancerous cells with healthy cells.

Give your patients an edge

As a health care professional, you know how vitally important it is to help patients quit smoking for good. Different people find success with different approaches -- cold turkey, quitting gradually, hypnosis, smoking-cessation program, support groups, counseling, or acupuncture.

Homeopathy works well in conjunction with a variety of strategies. Give the smokers you know a homeopathic formula that will help them kick the habit and take charge of their health.

They'll probably be around a lot longer to thank you for it.
