Big Pharma and psychiatrists believe that depression can be controlled by one class of antidepressants called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). Some SSRI drugs include Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox.

But according to the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the side-effects of SSRI drugs include:

-- increased suicidal thoughts
-- increased homicidal thoughts
-- headache
-- nausea
-- drowsiness
-- weight/appetite fluctuation
-- changes in sexual behavior
-- increased feelings of anxiety or DEPRESSION

You take an antidepressant hoping it will help you with depression, but you could end up with more problems because of the side effects.

Again, SSRI stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. The keyword is SEROTONIN, SEROTONIN, SEROTONIN, SEROTONIN.

When it comes to depression, the effects of serotonin is the main research target for the pharmaceutical industry. What is serotonin? Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in the transmission of nerve impulses.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers within the brain that allow communication between nerve cells. Serotonin is also found throughout your body.

Serotonin is also known as “The Molecule of Happiness”, and “The Wonder Drug.” Serotonin regulates your thoughts, mood, behavior, sleep, and appetite.

The problem with SSRI drugs is that they try to maximize the use of serotonin that already exists in your brain. SSRI (Selective SEROTONIN Reuptake Inhibitor) drugs do *not* introduce new serotonin into your body or brain.

In the past 50 years, studies from Japan, Europe, and North America have shown that low levels of serotonin in the brain can cause depression, aggressive behavior, bipolar, impulsiveness, addictions, and sleep disorders.

Where does serotonin come from? Serotonin comes from an ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID called L-Tryptophan. L-tryptophan is an ESSENTIAL amino acid because it *cannot* be produced by your body. You must obtain it from your diet (the food you eat). Some foods that contain L-Tryptophan are milk, turkey, poultry, bananas, eggs, and salmon. What you eat foods that are rich in L-Tryptophan, the conversion process is:

Food source --> L-Tryptophan --> 5HTP --> SEROTONIN

Vitamin B is also essential in the conversion of L-Tryptophan to serotonin.

Serotonin has been cited has the most important neurotransmitter in the study and cause of mental disorders. These days, foods do not contain enough L-Tryptophan because the way they are grown and what is used to grow them (pesticides, inorganic soil, fertilizers, hormones), so you may have to take L-Tryptophan as a dietary supplement to get enough serotonin.

Larson provides checklists of symptoms, possible disorders and corrective formulas along with simple but thorough explanations of how the biochemistry works. Occasionally, Larson's advice gets lost in her sales pitch for her Health Recovery Center in Minnesota ("The nutrients used at Health Recovery Center are the best quality we can find"). Still, anyone who has suffered from mental lapses, mood swings and stress will find plenty to mull over here.

In the brainstem, the most primitive part of the brain, lie clusters of serotonin neurons. The nerve fiber terminals of the serotonergic neurons extend all throughout the central nervous system from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord. I am not taking a stance that serotonin has its hand in all of these different pots, but after the research that I have completed for this paper, I feel comfortable talking about serotonin in reference to depression. No one can say for certain what exactly "causes" depression. But in this paper, I hope to give further insight into serotonin's specific role as a possible predeterminant for major depression and some hopes for those suffering from this illness.
